ComEd Energy Efficiency Program Norwood Park Fire Dept. Case Study Two years ago during our 75th Anniversary we had a monument put up and itÕs a 9/11 memorial. We had a regular incandescent light on it. We got them to change it to an LED and found that it was brighter and clearer and really showed the monument much better. ItÕs a beautiful, beautiful monument. So then we started saying ok well so if LEDs work out here, can they work inside the building as well? Terry told me the story about the 9/11 monument. You know one light. They changed one light bulb. And it led to this project. And they now saved thousands of dollars. ComEd had a Small Business Program for the private sector. So we thought letÕs try that with the smaller customers, in the public sector because they have probably some of the same issues. They donÕt have a lot of budget and they need the help. The Energy Efficiency Program really made the difference for us in deciding to go this way. After meeting with Chief Terry I told him about the program and how I can help him. He allowed me to do a complementary light assessment of this facility. What I showed him in the payback analysis, was that he basically was cutting his wattage in half. Because they run 24 hours a day theyÕre always burning electricity, and if we can cut their wattage in half, and save them money, itÕs a no brainer. A 14 month return on investment was a really sweat thing for me from a selling perspective to my board, and I almost fell off my chair when I read the email on that. HeÕs in a high pressure position where things like this where you can get a quick win, you now look very good to your board. You look good to your fire fighters,. You are now able to re-evaluate where funds are spent. IÕm seeing money saved. So IÕm really glad that they have this program, because otherwise this would be costing us easily $7-$800 more a month. We really enjoy working with the ComEd program. YouÕre able to save them a lot of money on their electric bill, on their energy, and give them great lighting. You know the help of Twin Supplies and how well they worked with him, to help him get this done quickly with minimal disruption to the firehouse, I think thatÕs also a testament to how the program works.
