Project Summary

The Kane County Judicial Center’s data center was operating inefficiently — the power and cooling support equipment was using more energy than the IT equipment itself. The data center features an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) that guards against unexpected hard shutdowns of the computers, but this is a major source of energy inefficiency. The power and cooling equipment was 60 percent less energy efficient than comparable operations.

The Solution

The ComEd® Energy Efficiency Program provided an incentive to the county to relocate its data center to a colocation facility in Chicago. Colocation offers organizations the ability to rent space for their IT equipment in a secure, reliable environment. The facility offers high-efficiency UPS systems and centralized cooling equipment such as chillers, water pumps and fans, which are more efficient than standalone equipment. The colocation facility equipment uses motors that vary speed based on actual requirements, creating a large energy-saving opportunity that did not exist at the Kane County Judicial Center data center.

In addition to ongoing energy savings — Kane County is projected to save 56,584 kWh per year, or more than $5,000 in energy costs — the county no longer has to maintain its IT equipment. That responsibility now falls to the colocation center.

Spreading the Word

Kane County officials were so happy with the project, the savings, and the support from ComEd that they hosted their own seminar to share their experience and benefits with other public sector entities. By sharing their story, Kane County has helped others begin projects with ComEd to lower their energy use and save money.

“Kane County has taken advantage of the substantial savings that are available to organizations that move their IT equipment to data center colocation facilities. We’re looking to be a county that leads by example and realizes cost savings on our own energy bills.”
