Combined Heat & Power

Stop wasting fuel... Receive energy efficiency incentives by recycling waste heat from on-site power generation equipment and turning it into useful energy.

The Combined Heat and Power (CHP) offering from the ComEd Energy Efficiency Program is a clean and efficient approach to generating power and thermal energy. CHP systems supply at least a portion of a facility’s electrical load and capture waste heat from hot exhaust gases for use in space heating, cooling, domestic hot water, dehumidification and/or process heating.

Available Incentives

Qualified projects are eligible for the following:

Feasibility Study:

  • Up to $10,000 for CHP projects <400kW
  • Up to $25,000 for CHP projects ≥400kW

Production Incentive:

  • $0.07 per eligible kWh, based on a 12 month Measurement and Verification (M&V) period.

Prepayment of $60/kW available upon:

  • Receipt of commissioning documents which confirm construction completion, capacity and efficiencies of the project.
  • At least one month of successful system operation.
  • Remaining incentive funds will be distributed upon the completion of 12 months of operation with associated M&V.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Incentives are available to non-residential ComEd customers regardless of retail electric supplier. Funds are limited and subject to availability.
  • CHP Systems must be Conventional, Topping, Bottoming cycle, or Waste Heat to Power (WHP).
  • Feasibility study incentives are available to facilities with a peak demand of ≥500kW.
  • Feasibility studies and projects must be pre-approved and used to study one of the following:
    • The viability of a new topping or bottoming cycle CHP installation
    • The rehabilitation of an existing system that has been idle for at least three years
    • An existing engine or combustion turbine system that is not presently outfitted with heat recovery capability that can be converted to a CHP system
  • A production incentive of $0.07 per kWh is available for qualifying customers.
  • Evaluated CHP systems must have annual fuel use efficiency of at least 60% Higher Heating Value (HHV) with at least 20% of the system’s total useful energy output in the form of useful thermal energy. These systems will have a net zero annual export of power to the grid. All conventional CHP systems must have heat recovery capability.
  • Projects with a simple payback period greater than 7 years or an incentive amount of $50,000 or greater may be subject to further eligibility evaluation.
  • Choose your preferred contractors from the ComEd Service Providers List.
  • CHP efficiency and kWh calculation methodologies are available in the Illinois Technical Reference Manual (TRM).
